There are two classes of display ...

  1. Dot matrix:
    These can display any shape you like at a resolution that only depends on the number of dots in the display.

  2. Segmented:
    These tend to be cheaper but can only show or hide the segments.
    This restricts the shapes that can be displayed.
    The commonest is the seven segment display for digits and a very few letter shapes.

There are three main types of display ...

  1. LCD: Liquid crystal display
  2. LED: Light emitting diodes
  3. OLED: Organic LED
    OLED Matrix Display
     

Old school displays based on neon gas discharge tubes or conventional light bulbs are falling into disuse.
