Interfacing Switches Safely

These interface circuits pull the input pin low or high.

If you have made an error configuring the TRIS registers and you connect this interface to an output pin, there will be no damage because the 1k resistor limits the current to a safe level.

It's not safe simply to connect I/O pins to the 0 V or 5 V line.
